L'il Sinners in the Hands of a Harmless God?

Here's an excerpt:
They huddled together, horrified by the rain pounding on the roof like a thousand drums and by fists pounding around the perimeter of the large watercraft. The shrieks of despair outside caused Shem's wife to sob deeply as she pictured the panic-stricken faces of her family members and friends. Was her mother desperately gulping her last breaths in the splattering rain on the other side of the gopher boards? Had the water risen above her rooftop? Was that her sister's baby she heard crying?
Outside the scene was catastrophic. Water had completely swallowed the village and bodies floated facedown in clusters at the water's surface.
Tell me, have you told your children this story--the story of Noah's flood? Or is your version illustrated with smiling kangaroos, giraffes, and a bright rainbow in the backrop?
At times I have cheated my children out of a correct fear of God by sugarcoating His fearsomeness. Because I desperately want them to love God, I'm tempted to flip past the floodwaters and rush to the rainbows. But in doing so, I edit God. By making Him a child-friendly, G-rated character, I grossly misrepresent Him to my children. If they are to know of His splendor, I must not sidestep His formidableness...
