The Bird Whipping Bible Story

‘Oh!  Yeah!” responded Cade after Sunday School, excited to share what he remembered from his lesson.  “We learned about when Jesus whipped the birds!”

Whipped the birds?  Gentle Jesus?  Creator of all?  We tried to not laugh, which we knew would make Cade mad.  We also tried to think of which Bible story could be interpreted as ‘Bird Whipping’.
  • The Israelites catching the low-flying quail God sent to the wilderness?
  • Noah swatting the birds away from the ark to scout land?
  • The Baker’s dream with the birds pecking away at the basket on his head?

Then, we asked Cade to see the picture he had colored in Sunday School.  Notice where the end of the suspended whip is.

We tried, but we just couldn't make it.  We had to laugh.

Kids are so visual!  Oh, how important it is that we give them an accurate picture of Jesus.

Funny!

AND convicting, because I know I can talk about Jesus until I'm blue in the face, but unless my kids see me living in my faith, they won't get it.  (There's got to be a better way to say that, but you get the idea.)

I'll never read that part in the Bible without thinking of the whipped birds, now!

Yes, classic Cade.  I'm still cracking up about this... thinking of it from the birds' perspective (in the picture), which is obviously what Cade focused in on.  But hey-- they just moved up in the world.  In stead of being sacrificed, they just get whipped.

Farmer's Wife, so true that WE are a big part of how our kids see Jesus.  Is he a bird whipping tyrant?  Or a loving master, who wants us to flourish?  Which do they see in me?
