Nobody Signs up for Nursery for the Wrong Reasons

A friend and I were talking about church nursery workers last night.  Her pastor says that nursery duty doesn't just allow ministry to happen in other parts of the building; it is ministry.

I think sometimes pastors become pastors for the wrong reasons.  Worship leaders and teachers, too.  I've certainly done things which looked like ministry, but were really just selfish attempts to gain personal honor or appreciation.

But nursery workers?  I don't think many nursery workers sign on for the wrong reason. For one thing, nobody even knows they're there.  Nobody, who can talk, anyway.  They're usually stuffed into some dimly lit room in the basement, far enough from the masses that wailing infants won't disturb anyone.  Anyone except the nursery worker, that is.

When Jesus said that the last shall be first, I wonder if he was thinking of nursery workers.  They certainly are the last ones off duty!  And the last ones to be honored or thanked... especially by the babies!

I think that all of us non-nursery workers will probably regret our decision to opt out of nursery duty-- especially when we gather around Christ's judgment seat and watch him hand rewards to faithful nursery workers who wiped little noses and bottoms because, and only because, they wanted to serve Jesus.

But it's not too late.  If you ask really nice, I'll bet they'd let you on the nursery schedule at your church!

Yes, the Nursery Angels....many was the Sunday I nearly kissed their graham cracker-crumbed feet as they greeted my children with cheery smiles!  For one hour, I was able to praise and refill the God-tank with no interruption for more chocolate milk or a messy diaper.

I think anyone who works in children's ministry, who has a heart for little ones, are special people.

I'm 17 and so of course don't have kids of my own but as a Pastor's daughter I enlisted myself for Crèche duties looking after kids between 3 months and 4 years. I abolutley love them - they are the highlight of my week! Yes babies and toddlers cant verbalise their appreciation but they sure know how to show it. I would never exchange my time looking after the little one for anything!

When I get back home I'm completley shattered (with a tonne of homework!) but their smiles and gurgles make it all worth while! Thanks Shannon for this article!

God Bless!

Angela, I love that idea of babies being Jesus in disguise!  (I have often thought my own children were something other than Jesus in disguise, but we'll leave that discussion for another day.  :)  Don't you want to just serve that little guy in the picture and wipe his nose?  I totally wish I could pick him up!

Farmer's Wife, maybe we should offer a parafin dip for those graham cracker crusted toes after church!  (Might get even more cheery smiles!)  Thanks for commenting... as always, you make me smile.

Jerusha, WOW!!  I'm so delighted to hear from a 17 year old in Scotland!!  Your sweet spirit toward serving babies is SUCH a blessing to me... and I'm sure to your church family as well.   You are right... the babies DO know how to say thank you in their own way.  :)

Have you read the book 'Do Hard Things' by teenagers Alex and Bret Harris? You remind me of what they are proposing... a 'rebelution' against low expectations for teens.

Thanks SO much for posting your comment!  :)
