Sulking over Styrofoam: Big Church and Little People

Part 8 of 10.  Ideas for 'Big Church' to try with your 'little people'.

This year, we attended a Good Friday service at a nearby church, which had advertised a "family friendly" environment.  Our family was very friendly until part of our family went to receive communion, and the other part didn't.  You've never seen such sulking over two drops of grape juice and one Styrofoam pellet.  It sort of detracted from the worshipful environment.

I realized that we had never discussed communion with Cade, and he had no idea of its significance.  He just thought they were handing out snacks.  Before he's ready for 'Big Church', we will want to discuss the following:

  • What do the bread and cup represent?
  • What does communion help us remember?
  • Why does Jesus want us to remember this?
  • Who should not take communion?  Why not?
  • What are some of the warnings that the Bible gives about communion?

How have you helped your kids prepare for communion?

We were JUST talking about this, last night, with my sister and some friends!!!

My sister and I both accepted the Lord before our 5th birthdays, so we didn't really remember ever NOT taking communion, but my cousin, Beth said her family didn't allow them to until the kids were about 8 years old, and then only after a big sit-down with the parents.

My mother was a deaconness (I guess that's what you call it) in our country church, so I remember helping her prepare the communion and her explaining every step. Our pastor did an exceptional job of communion service, so there was never any doubt or question as to who was "eligible".

So funny you'd write about this today!  Thank you! It is an important part of our worship, and often just assumed that everyone knows what's going on.

You can turn off the cameras, now, Shannon.  That's three posts that are eerily pointed and poignant to my life, specifically....
